Biography

Sub Urban is an American singer-songwriter and producer who broke through with his eerie 2019 hit “Cradles,” which went viral on TikTok.

Born Daniel Virgil Maisonneuve in 1999 in Nyack, New York, he was raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey. With French Canadian and Taiwanese roots, he began classical piano training at age six but quit as a teen to explore his own musical ideas. By age 15, he was producing electronic music and developing his distinctive style.

In 2016, he dropped out of high school to focus on music, citing struggles with manic depression. During this period of self-imposed isolation, he crafted songs that would later define his signature dark-pop sound. “Cradles,” released in 2019, gained widespread attention after exploding on TikTok.

Sub Urban followed up with the 2020 EP Thrill Seeker, featuring tracks like “Freak” with REI AMI, which showcased his blend of theatrical pop, glitchy production, and haunting vocals. He quickly became known for his cinematic, off-kilter aesthetic both in music and visuals.

Now considered a voice in alternative pop, Sub Urban continues to push creative boundaries with genre-defying releases and self-directed visuals, drawing a loyal audience through his unique sonic identity and storytelling.
