Biography

Loyle Carner is a British rapper known for introspective lyrics, soulful beats, and Mercury Prize-nominated debut Yesterday’s Gone.

Born Benjamin Gerard Coyle-Larner in South London in 1994, he was raised by his mother and stepfather. His stage name stems from a spoonerism of his surname, reflecting both his dyslexia and ADHD, which shaped his personal and creative life.

He made his music debut with the 2014 EP A Little Late and gained attention through support slots for Joey Bada$$ and Nas. Carner’s reflective and emotionally honest style set him apart in the UK hip-hop scene early on.

His debut album Yesterday’s Gone (2017) earned critical acclaim and a Mercury Prize nomination. He followed up with Not Waving, but Drowning (2019) and hugo (2022), both praised for their storytelling and jazz-influenced production.

Carner has received multiple Brit Award nominations and performed at Glastonbury. Beyond music, he has also co-directed videos and collaborated with artists like Arlo Parks and Kae Tempest.
